Using Hay Guard with Small Square Balers

We often get questions from growers about the correct application rates of Hay Guard when baling small squares. Sometimes we hear stories of people watering down Hay Guard as a solution - DO NOT DO THIS.

To make things simple, we’ve put together a helpful guide and a downloadable pdf. that help you calculate the correct flow rate.

Calculation of Nozzle Flow Rates for Small Square Balers

1. Strokes per minute divided by flakes per bale = number of bales per minute

2. Multiply bales per minute X 60 to get bales per hour

3. Multiply bales per hour X average bale weight to get tons per hour

4. Multiply tons/hr X dose rate per ton (0.8 for HayGuard) to give litres per hour

5. Divide litres/hr by 60 to give litres per minute

Example:

90 strokes/min at 12 flakes per bale = 7.5 bales/min

7.5 X 60 = 450 bales/hr

450 X 25Kg = 11.25 tons per hr

11.25 tons X 0.8 (HayGuard dose rate) = 9 Litres/hr

9L/hr divided by 60 minutes = 150mL/minute
